Port of Durban
Steel Harbour Launches

Veecraft Marine was awarded the contract worth R10.8 million.
This was met with much excitement by ten other companies who will benefit as
suppliers or subcontractors. More than 40% of the contract will benefit BEE companies.
At least 30 people will be directly employed during the contract.

There will also be a knock on effect to many other companies in the Cape.
The vessels will primarily used to carry out light tug duties and the transportation of birthing staff.

Sparks were flying as the plates were ground
and welded into place.

With the frames in place, the hulls
will be getting skinned.

Watch these chaps go. The wheelhouse is being built and the bow is growing dayly.

Just look at me now. In fact, look at us now.

My engine is about to be mounted and soon I will have a deck with crew seats and all for the Durban crew. I am looking pretty in white on the inside
and my fenders are being tried for size before
the painting is done.

I have such neat practical curves & the white is showing off my practical curves. My windows are being fitted & various
components are being installed.

Some last bits are being fitting before
they take to the road for the launch.

This low bed trailer is a little scary. But I need
it to get to the sea for the launch.

Our cool keel cooler, stabliser fin and one of
my many anodes.

It's almost always a rainy day for a launch.
But here I go in the sea for the very first time.

I look good in side profile with a bit of sun
on me. My designer sure gave me cool lines.

Here we are together for the first time.
We start sea trials tomorrow.

Clearview screen, wipers, bell, life rings
and such neat practicle windows.

Did you ever see such a nice clean uncluttered wheel house?

We have had our first day of sea trials.
Edmund, Andre and the others are really
happy with us.

We have a very impressive switch board. We are sure to impress the the chaps in Durban.
Here I am in Durban with one of the older boats
who we will be helping to get all the work done.

Durban based Naval Africa’s Pieter Volschenk designed the 16m-harbour launches. They were designed for various light tug duties as well as transportation of berthing staff within the harbour, line handling, docking of smaller fishing vessels and similar vessels. The Kort Nozzle gives them additional thrust. The keel fin runs from amidships to the prop. She has two stabiliser fins. This configuration gives the vessels good stability.
The design allows easy access to the various equipment for maintainance.
There is access from the wheelhouse to the saloon.
The wheelhouse has sliding side windows  for ventilation and communication.
